The Friday timesheet ritual disappears: time tracking with ChatGPT and Claude

The Friday timesheet ritual, and why it exists

You know the routine. It is half past four on Friday, you open your timesheet, and you try to remember what Tuesday actually looked like. A bit of the Acme redesign, a call you cannot quite place, two hours that have vanished entirely. Reconstructing the week from memory is slow, it is inaccurate, and it quietly costs you billable hours every single week.

The reason the ritual exists is simple: your timesheet has always been separate from the places where your work actually happens. Your calendar knows about your meetings. Your inbox knows about your projects. Slack and Teams know what you were really doing all day. None of them could talk to your timesheet. Now they can.

Temponia ships a hosted MCP server, so you can connect ChatGPT or Claude directly to your timesheet and let the assistant do the reconstruction for you. You describe your week, or point the AI at the tools that already recorded it, and the entries appear for your review.

Why it matters

From a 40-minute reconstruction to a two-minute review

Consultants, accountants, agencies and freelancers lose real time, and real revenue, rebuilding the week from memory. When your AI assistant can read your calendar, inbox and chat tools and write to Temponia, Friday afternoon becomes a quick review of entries that are already drafted for you.

What you connect, and how

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open standard that lets AI assistants talk to the tools you use. Temponia exposes a hosted, remote MCP server, so any MCP-aware assistant can read and write your timesheet once you authorise it. There are no API keys, nothing to install, and you can revoke access at any time.

Connect Claude

In Claude, go to Customize then Connectors, click the plus button, name the connector Temponia, and paste https://temponia.com/mcp. Click Connect, sign in to Temponia, and approve the two permissions: read your data, and create or update entries. About 60 seconds.

Add the ChatGPT app

Temponia is an official app in the ChatGPT app directory, so there is nothing to paste. Open Temponia in the ChatGPT app directory, add it, sign in to Temponia, and approve the same two permissions. That is the whole setup.

Log time from a sentence

The simplest use is to just say what you did. The assistant infers the project, sets the duration, and writes the entry straight to Temponia.

"Add 3 hours on the Acme website project this morning, then a 1-hour call with Globex after lunch."

Describe a whole day in one go and it still works, splitting your sentence into separate entries on the right projects.

Reconstruct your week from the tools you already use

This is where it gets genuinely useful. Both ChatGPT and Claude can hold several connectors in one conversation. So alongside Temponia, you connect the tools that already recorded your week, and ask the assistant to turn them into a timesheet. You always review before anything is saved.

From your calendar and inbox

"Look at my Google Calendar and Gmail from last week. Draft the matching Temponia entries, group anything for the same client, skip personal events, and let me review before saving."

From Slack

Slack has its own connector for both ChatGPT and Claude. Point the assistant at your Slack activity and it can infer which projects you were active on, from the channels you posted in and the threads you were part of.

"Go through my Slack messages and threads from this week. Work out which projects I was active on each day, estimate the time, and draft Temponia entries for me to review."

From Microsoft Teams

If your team lives in Microsoft 365, the Teams and Outlook connectors do the same job.

"Check my Microsoft Teams chats and meetings from yesterday, work out what I worked on, and log the time in Temponia grouped by client."

And you can combine them in a single request, which is where the Friday ritual really disappears:

"Between my Outlook calendar, email and Teams from last week, reconstruct my billable hours, skip internal chatter, and create the timesheet in Temponia. I will approve everything before you save."
Prompts to try

Everyday requests that replace the manual work

  • "Fill in yesterday from my calendar and Slack, and let me review."
  • "Which clients have I not logged any time against this week?"
  • "I was in back-to-back meetings Tuesday. Reconstruct them from my calendar into Temponia."
  • "Turn the issues I closed in Linear this sprint into time entries on the right project."
  • "Compare billable versus internal hours for last month and tell me where I am slipping."

Answers and reports without opening a dashboard

Because the connection reads as well as writes, the reporting you used to dig out of a dashboard becomes a question.

"How many billable hours did I log last month, by client?"

Need a visual for a client meeting? Ask for a chart you can drop straight into your slides.

"Show my hours per project this quarter as a bar chart, and flag anything over budget."

You stay in control

Letting an assistant draft your timesheet only works if you stay in charge. A few things to know:

  • You review before it saves. The assistant proposes entries. Nothing lands in Temponia until you approve it.
  • OAuth, not API keys. You sign in once. No secrets sit in your chat history.
  • Scoped permissions. Temponia grants exactly two things: read your projects and entries, and create or update entries. Nothing else.
  • Revoke any time. Remove the connector from ChatGPT or Claude, or from your Temponia settings, and access is gone immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track time with both ChatGPT and Claude?

Yes. In ChatGPT, Temponia is an official app you add from the app directory in a couple of clicks. In Claude, you add it as a custom connector with the Temponia URL. Either way, you then log time by chatting.

How does the AI know what I worked on?

It reads the tools you choose to connect. Alongside Temponia you can add your calendar, email, Slack or Microsoft Teams, and ask the assistant to reconstruct your hours from your real activity. You review the draft before anything is saved.

Can it really rebuild my week from Slack or Teams?

Yes. With the Slack or Teams connector enabled, the assistant can look at the channels you posted in, the threads you joined and the meetings you attended, estimate the time per project, and draft matching Temponia entries for you to check and approve.

Do I need API keys or code?

No. You connect through OAuth inside your assistant: sign in once, approve two permissions, done. There are no API keys to copy and nothing to install, and you can revoke access whenever you like.
